In this article, we will explain what a syringe pump is. Syringe pumps are devices that provide controlled liquid flow through the precise movement of an attached syringe, achieved by pushing a mechanical plunger with a highly precise mechanism. This feature gives them a wide range of applications in medical and scientific fields. However, medical syringe pumps and laboratory syringe pumps are different devices. In this article, we will focus primarily on laboratory syringe pumps.
While very basic versions of syringe pumps exist, there are also highly advanced ones. In basic syringe pumps, only the flow rate can be adjusted, and they operate only in the pushing direction. In other words, you fill the syringe with liquid, place it in the device, and press start. It then pushes the syringe at a constant speed to provide fluid flow.
An advanced syringe pump, however, can offer much more than this. For example, let's consider the SMART SP device shown in the image below. Developed by Asensis Nanotechnology, this device stands out with its high precision and smart software. While you have to calculate everything yourself with a basic syringe pump, all calculations and error checks are performed automatically with such a device. You simply enter the inner diameter of the syringe you want to use, then type in the desired flow rate. Before that, the maximum and minimum flow rates achievable with that syringe are already calculated automatically. If the value you enter falls outside this range, the automatic error control kicks in and prevents you from entering that value.
Like all advanced devices, the SMART SP can be operated in both push and pull modes. Detailed flow parameters can be easily entered thanks to the smart software and touchscreen. From the advanced settings window, volume and time limits can be set, allowing the pumping process to continue until a specific duration or volume is reached. If you want this volume or time period to repeat periodically, the cycle feature can be used. All these settings can be saved as a profile with a single touch, and the device also features a generous memory capacity of 100 profiles.
In the past, obtaining a device with these capabilities required a significant budget. This meant you had to choose between a simple, affordable device and an advanced but prohibitively expensive one. However, devices like the SMART SP — both sophisticated and accessibly priced — free you from having to make that difficult choice between two extremes.
